The Monsoon Session of the Bihar Legislature — the last before the upcoming Assembly elections — ended not with legislation or policy breakthroughs, but with a political storm that mirrored the monsoon outside. Over five days of proceedings, the State Assembly in Patna saw more political theatrics than governance, as tensions between the ruling NDA and the Opposition Mahagathbandhan reached a fever pitch.
Opposition in Black
From Day 1 of the session, Opposition MLAs and MLCs, primarily from the RJD-led Mahagathbandhan, arrived dressed in black. The reason? To protest the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls being carried out across Bihar — an exercise they allege is politically motivated and lacking in transparency. The black attire was a silent but strong visual protest that dominated the Assembly galleries throughout the week.
CM Nitish Kumar Hits Back
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar did not take kindly to the protest. Speaking in the Legislative Council, he lashed out at the Opposition for what he described as "wasting time" and indulging in "senseless drama". Referring pointedly to Rabri Devi, RJD leader and former CM, he remarked, “She might have given an instruction and all of you followed her like puppets in black.”
The veteran JD(U) leader seemed visibly agitated by the coordinated protest, asserting that important legislative work was being obstructed.
Rabri Devi Responds With Explosive Allegation
Outside the House, Rabri Devi didn’t hold back either. Addressing the media, she turned the heat up several notches by alleging a “conspiracy to kill” her son and Leader of the Opposition, Tejashwi Yadav. According to her, there have been four separate attempts on his life, including one where a truck allegedly tried to ram into his convoy.
"The BJP-JD(U) government is trying to eliminate my son. So many murders are happening every day in Bihar. They are doing nothing but suppressing the voices of the Opposition," she claimed.
The allegations have not only added a deeply personal and emotional dimension to the political clash but have also raised questions about law and order and political vendetta in the run-up to the elections.
Tejashwi Alleges Abuse, Intimidation
Tejashwi Yadav himself had earlier accused NDA leaders of abusing and intimidating him during the debate on the SIR. His repeated criticism of the electoral revision exercise has found resonance among Mahagathbandhan supporters, but the ruling side has categorically denied any wrongdoing.
The Road to October-November Polls
With Assembly elections scheduled for October-November, this Monsoon Session was expected to be a platform for key legislative actions, welfare announcements, and electoral messaging. Instead, it concluded with bitter confrontations, walkouts, and now, sensational allegations.
What remains to be seen is whether the drama in the House will translate into momentum on the ground — for either side.
As Bihar gears up for yet another high-stakes political contest, the battle lines are clearly drawn. And if the events of the Monsoon Session are any indication, the campaign ahead will be nothing short of explosive.
