The lock gate no. 1 of the Durgapur barrage broke under water pressure

A lock gate of the Durgapur barrage in Burdwan district in West Bengal broke on Friday. This may trigger floods in the area. DVC has stopped water release in Maithan and Panchet Dam. The lock gate no. 1 broke under water pressure. Repairing is on in an emergency basis.

Durgapur Barrage constructed in 1955 is 692 metres (2,270 ft) long. It has 34 gates. The size of gates are 60 ft × 16 ft. The size of left and right under sluices are 60 ft × 18 ft.Durgapur Barrage is 12 metres (39 ft) high. So it can cause a flood situation in Hooghly and Howrah district.
