Sourav Ganguly just ignored the comparisons between Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli as batsman but said the 29-year-old is a lot more proactive as captain than Tendulkar was because of the generational shift.
Ganguly and his wife Dona participated in a session at India Today Conclave East in Kolkata and spoke on a range of issues.
Dada, as Ganguly is fondly called by former teammates and his legion of fans, also reckoned Kohli would get close to Tendulkar’s 49 ODI hundreds. Currently, Kohli has amassed 32 ODI tons.
“Kohli lot more proactive than Tendulkar as captain because the generation is different,” Ganguly said.
The former captain said Kohli was still a long way away from Tendulkar’s 100 international hundreds but felt the Delhi dasher’s 50 tons in nine years is a sensational feat.
“Sachin’s 100 hundreds is still a long way away but 50 hundreds in 9 years is phenomenal. He will get close to Tendulkar’s ODI hundreds.”
However, Ganguly said Kohli, like everyone else, will find it tougher with age.
“It gets tougher with age. He plays a whole lot of cricket. He plays ODIs, T20s, and Tests but Virat will get to 50 ODI hundreds – the challenge will be in Test matches to get that far to Sachin. It’s a terrific feeling I got to see Sachin and now I am getting to see this young boy.”
