At the age of 89, Latika is now famous as the grandmother who turns old fabric into beautiful bags. She upcycles old garments like sarees, kurtas and even cushion-covers into beautiful Potli bags. She loves collecting old saris, kurtas, and clothes from all over India and recycling them into one-of-a-kind handbags and pouches. With every bag you carry along history and its own unique story.
Latika Chakrabarty was born in Dhubri, Assam. She was married to Krishna Lal Chakrabarty, an Officer-Surveyor from Survey Of India and after the demise of her husband, she lived with her son, Capt Raj Chakravorty, an Indian Naval Officer. This led her to live a life of travel. In her journey across the length and breadth of India she collected some beautiful saris, kurtas, and eclectic pieces of clothing, each with a unique story of its own.
She always enjoyed sewing and designing new things from old and over time she has now focussed her energies towards designing and creating handbags or potlis with her innate talent and 64-year old sewing machine. Her bags are all handmade with love and care and each of them have had a previous life in different parts and different eras of India.
At this age, she has started an online business to sell potli bags, which are decorated drawstring pouches. The business is named Latika’s Bags.
It was her daughter-in-law who inspired her to make potli bag. She realised her talent of converting her vintage sarees into something that would be used more frequently when her daughter-in-law asked her to make a potli bag that would match with her saree. Post that, there was no turning back and she decided to make drawstring pouches and potlis out of the saree and fabrics that she had preserved over the years. She began gifting them to relatives and friends. Her designs and sewing skills were highly appreciated by everyone until one day her grandson, Joy, recognised her potential and thought it deserved much more recognition and appreciation.
Her grandson created a website that helped Latika become famous. While on a trip from Germany, her grandson saw her work and thought that it should be expanded and made official. He then created a website for Latika’s bags and her other grandchildren promoted her work on social media websites.
Latika’s story proves that if you have talent and passion, nothing can stop you, especially not your age.
