Woman ‘infused’ with wrong blood by Kolkata hospital, case filed

A woman in Kolkata is battling for her life after a private hospital in Kolkata allegedly infused her with the wrong blood group.

According to reports, 31-year-old Baishakhi Saha was brought to the Columbia Asia hospital on 5 June after she complained of stomach ache.

Her husband Abhijit Saha alleged that after a surgery, the hospital infused his wife with AB+ blood even though her blood group is A+. He said that the transfusion resulted in multiple organ failures and turned Baishakhi’s condition critical.

Chief of Medical and Admin, Columbia Asia Hospitals, Dr Tirthankar Bagchi said, “The patient is better now but she is still under observation. A team has been formed by our head office in Bengaluru to find out whether she was infused with blood of a wrong group.”

“Someone might have called the patient’s husband for the outstanding bill but it was not that management who had forced him. If someone has done anything wrong it will be investigated,” he added responding to the mounting bills that Abhijit Saha faces even though he has reportedly paid Rs 2.5 lakh.

According to The Indian Express, the doctor currently treating the patient said that Baishakhi is recovering. “Let’s hope for the best. She had some sepsis issue with transmission reaction when she was sent to me,” the doctor said.

An internal probe has been ordered by the hospital. The family of the patient has lodged a case of medical negligence against the hospital in Kolkata’s Bidhan Nagar police station. Abhijit has also reportedly sent a letter to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee seeking action against the hospital.

A statement from the hospital said that “a team of consultants will continue to provide appropriate and aggressive treatment until the patient recovers fully”.
