This decision was bound to be taken by the apex court after Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana said that they would not allow the film to be released in the states over alleged distortion of historical facts.
Despite of getting clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).the states had refused to release the movie.Right after that the makers of the film had moved to the Supreme Court to ensure the pan India release of the film.on January 25.
The release of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus was initally banned as there was a chance of widespread chaos and protests by various right wing outfits which were led by the Rajput Karni Sena.

The Rajput factions said that Bhansali had distorted historical facts and accused him of showing the queen in bad light. After a lot of debate and protests the movie was finally given clearance by CBFC . This happened after a panel of historians and members of royal families was formed to review the film and take a final call.
