Maharashtra Bandh: almost 200 state buses, 40 two-wheelers and 10 to 12 four-wheelers damaged by the protesters

Following the day-long bandh on Wednesday by the dalit groups in Maharashtra over the Bhima Koregaon caste clashes, The city police have registered a number of 16 FIRs and take almost 300 people into custody. The Internet services in Kohlapur were being suspended.

The protest damaged almost 200 state buses, 40 two-wheelers and 10 to 12 four-wheelers, police said. In Parbhani district of Marathwada region, an office of the RSS was attacked yesterday, police said.

The bandh was called yesterday following the violence in Pune district on January 1 when the Dalit groups were celebrating the bicentenary of the Bhima-Koregaon battle in which the forces of the British East India Company defeated the Peshwa’s Army. The Dalit leaders use to commemorate the British victory, as it is believed that soldiers from the Mahar community were part of the East India Company’s forces. The Peshwa’s were Brahmins, and the victory is seen as a symbol of assertiveness by Dalits.
