A group of divers have deciphered what is believed to be the largest flooded cave on the planet. This discovery could enlighten us about the Maya civilization. The explorers have connected two under water caverns in Eastern Mexico .
According to the The Gran Acuifero Maya (GAM), a project dedicated to the study and preservation of the subterranean waters of the Yucatan peninsula, after months of exploring a particular maze of underwater channels this cave was identified.
The director of GAM is delighted to say that this discovery will help in understansing of the development of the cultural heritage of the region which had the predominance of maya civilization before the Spanish conquest.
“It allows us to appreciate much more clearly how the rituals, the pilgrimage sites and ultimately the great pre-Hispanic settlements that we know emerged,” he told Reuters.
The Yucatan peninsula is quite fascinating as it is full of monumental relics of the Maya people, the cities of whom designed an extensive network of sinkholes which were connected to the subterranian waters called cenotes. The descendants of the maya civilization inhabit the region still and some cenotes acquire religious significance to the civilization.
