Cops told to ensure safety of inter-caste couples in Rajasthan

Special steps are being taken to prevent incidents of honour killing in the state. The entire responsibility of security of the couples in the state who have done inter-caste marriage or love marriage will be on the shoulders of the police. If such incidents happen in Rajasthan, the SP level officers will be investigating the cases. In the matter, the Home Department has issued detailed orders to the Police Department in compliance with the three-month-old order of the Supreme Court.

DGP state police crime branch CID-CB, ADG Civil Rights, police commissioners of Jaipur and Jodhpur, Range IG and District SPs have been instructed in this regard by the special secretary of the Home Department Ramesh Kumar Sharma. Divisional commissioners and district collectors have also been instructed in this regard by issuing a separate letter.

The home minister Gulab Chand Kataria instructed to follow the order passed by the Supreme Court in the writ petition Civil Shakti Vahini vs Bharat Sangh on March 27. Kataria also directed the respective station incharge to keep a regular check on such cases. According to the Home Department, the respective SDM or SP will be responsible for the security of the couples involved in intercaste marriages or being opposed. The government officials will also help the couples to get married. In the special cell to be constituted at the district level, SP, social welfare officer and other officers should be included.

According to the Home Department, records of Khap Panchayats will be kept in the police stations for prevention of honour killings. For this, the police headquarters will have to mark the police stations and if such an incident occurs in the respective police station area, then the SHO will be held responsible.
