An Indian Army major was arrested in Meerut on Sunday in connection with the murder of a 35-year-old woman, who was the wife of another officer, in Delhi on Saturday, said a police officer.
Nikhil Rai Handa was arrested by a Delhi Police team in Meerut’s Sadar, said Ranvijay Singh, Superintendent of Police (City).
Shailaja Dwivedi and her husband Amit Dwivedi lived in the Army quarters in west Delhi’s Naraina with their six-year-old son. Shailaja was a homemaker. Amit, who is posted in Dimapur, had recently come to Delhi for training.
Shailaja was found dead by passersby on an isolated stretch of road leading to the Railway Protection Force Mess near Brar Square, close to the Delhi Cantonment metro station. She had been hit by a vehicle. It was, however, too early to say if the killers had rammed her body on purpose or if it was hit by another passing vehicle.
Vijay Kumar, deputy commissioner of Delhi Police (West), told Hindustan Times the brother of a suspect is being questioned. He refused to confirm if an arrest had been made in the case.
