3 year old Sherin Mathews, body was found near a suburban Dallas area where she lived with her foster parents. A grand jury indicted her father Wesley Mathews for capital punishment on Saturday. The child was adopted from and Indian orphanage and was found dead just after a year of adoption.
35-year-old Sini Mathews, mother of Sherin was also indicted on a charge of abandoning a child. The punishment for that ranges from two to 20 years in prison with a fine up to USD 10,000.
Announcing the indidctment,Dallas County District Attorney Faith Johnson said “We can’t go into details, but based on that autopsy report, we were able to determine that we can seek capital murder for this case.”
The court record shows that the37year old father also faces charges of child abandonment and tampering with evidence. The couple has a four year old biological daughter whose hearing with other child protective services is scheduled for the end of the month.
Sherin, reported missing on October 7, was found dead in a culvert about 1 km from her home on October 22 by a cadaver dog during a massive search for the missing toddler.
Initially Welesley had told the police that Sherin had just disappeared over night when he had ordered her to stand outside their house as apunishment for not drinking milk. It was 3 am in the morning and when he came back to check on her she was not there.
